Free delivery and priority for relief cargo will continue on Vietjet flights departing from Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to five airports in Vietnam’s central region as another typhoon approaches which could aggravate the region’s worst flooding in 40 years.

As of 21 October, the airline has delivered over 200 tonnes of emergency relief cargo to the five airports of Chu Lai (Quang Nam province), Da Nang, Phu Bai (Thua Thien Hue province), Dong Hoi (Quang Binh province) and Vinh (Nghe An province).

Two weeks of heavy downpour caused record-breaking flood levels in many localities in the central region along with mass landslides, killing at least 133 people and leaving thousands stranded in the water.

During the weekend, typhoon Saudel made landfall in central Vietnam as a tropical storm, but a new typhoon (Molave) is on the same trajectory from the east and is expected to arrive on Wednesday. The Southeast Asia nation is preparing to evacuate 1.3 million people, CNN reported.

“All relief packages are prioritized to be delivered to the central region as quickly as possible,” said Vietjet Cargo’s standing vice president Tran Quang Hoa. The carrier has also offered to take volunteers on freight flights for free to distribute goods and medicine and help affected residents.

Vietjet is also calling on all of its employees to donate under the programme “Spreading love with Vietjet to help flood victims in Central Vietnam.

Vu Quang Xuyen, who leads the cargo team at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, said, “We have focused 100 percent on delivering aid to the central region over the last few days. Vietjet’s agents usually receive commercial cargo and transport them to the airport for delivery, but this time, we handle all aid packages donated by organizations and individuals directly.”
