SpiceJet moves first batch of Covid-19 shots across India

SpiceJet is showing its commitment in playing a crucial role in the ‘biggest vaccination drive in history” as it delivered a large consignment of Covid-19 vaccines on 12 January from the city of Pune to Delhi on flight 8937.
India’s first consignment of the Covishield vaccine from the Serum Institute of India consisted of 34 boxes and weighed over a tonne (1,088 kilograms).
The private airline will transport multiple vaccine consignments to several cities, including Guwahati, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bhubaneswar, Bengaluru, Patna and Vijayawada on Tuesday. SpiceJet said it is fully prepared to transport the Covid-19 vaccine, as well as any type of cargo, within India and overseas.
“Today marks the beginning of a long and decisive phase in India’s fight against the pandemic and SpiceJet is proud to assist in the biggest vaccination drive in the history of mankind,” said Ajay Singh, chairman and managing director of SpiceJet.
India has the second highest number of Covid-19 cases next to the US at around 10.48 million, Payload Asia learned. Active cases on 12 January reached 12,584, and the number of deaths increased by 167 to 151,327.
As cases continue to surge, the transport of vaccines and other time-critical cargo with minimum human contact has become even more crucial, and Singh believes this is where technology and digitisation will come in.
“In the times of social distancing, technology and digitization have an extremely critical role to play in ensuring seamless execution of operations with utmost safety,” noted Singh.
