The Japan Airlines (JAL) Group has announced its consolidated financial results for 2014, with operating revenue up 2.7 per cent year-on-year to ¥1,344.7 billion (US$11.2 billion) with a 7.7 per cent growth in operating income to ¥179.6 billion for the same period. Accordingly JAL Group’s operating margin stood at 13.36 per cent. The group result was boosted by the contribution from cargo operations, which make up 0.71 per cent of the overall result, up 4.9 per cent year-on-year.
In international cargo operations, JAL Group saw rising volumes from automobile-related shipments from Japan spurred by the growth in exports, especially to North America which was also boosted by the US West Coast port strike. The company also improved its efficiency at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, where flight frequencies have increased and better connectivity between domestic and international flights and transported shipments on other carriers’ aircraft under airline charter agreements was also improved, the airline said. As a result, the volume of international cargo handled during 2014 increased by 16 per cent year-on-year in Revenue Tonne Cargo Kilometres (RCTK) terms and revenue increased by 11.2 per cent to ¥60.3 billion.
The volume of international mail handled by JAL Group during the reporting period in terms of RMTK increased by 6.1 per cent year-on-year, with international mail revenue increasing by 14.9 per cent year-on-year to ¥10.3 billion. The company stated that its domestic cargo operations were affected by a modal shift from surface transportation to air transportation due to a shortage of trucks. However due to the decrease in supply, the volume of domestic cargo handled during the reporting period when measured in RCTK decreased by 2.8 per cent year-on-year and revenue decreased by 4.5 per cent year-on-year to ¥24.2 billion.
