A new cargo hub is set to take off after Deccan Cargo Pvt Ltd recently signed a MoU with Maharashtra Airports Development Company (MADC) for setting up a state-of-the-art cargo hub atthe multi-modal international passenger and cargo Nagpur airport. The hub is expected to start functioning by January 2009.
The MADC is to provide Deccan Cargo with 50 acres of land at Mihan for setting up the cargo facility, which is expected to benefit local agricultural producers.
Capt Gopinath of Deccan Cargo said that only seven cities in India have air cargo connectivity. The small cities should get air cargo connectivity as soon as possible to enable expansion of economy.
“Industry’s production cost comes down by 25 per cent if the country has air connectivity. Industries have to spendless on inventories and warehouses with air cargo connectivity,” he said.
The crisis has resulted in the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh giving his approval for the setting up of a committee to examine various issues relating to the financial crises being faced by domestic airlines.
