Belly Ache - Payload Asia March 2010 Issue

From splash to trash

The one-year anniversary of the ditching of a US Airways A320 on the Hudson River in New York was commemorated recently. To mark the occasion, the crew and passengers of US Airways Flight 1549 had a reunion in New York, and even took a boat ride together on the Hudson to the place where the disabled aircraft splashed down on January 15, 2009.

Around the same time a Piper PA - 18, that also there to commemorate the so-called ‘Miracle on the Hudson’, appeared on the scene towing a banner that read: “If you died today would you go to heaven or hell? John 14:6.” Don’t ask us, we don’t quite get it either, but back to the story.

Unfortunately the Piper experienced a mechanical problem and ended up making a forced landing in the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island. Must be some kind of local Bermuda Triangle. The aircraft landed safely, and the pilot was unharmed, but now a year after the ‘splash landing’ we have a…wait for it…. ‘trash landing’! Don’t worry, the Bellyachers aren’t planning on quitting their day jobs anytime soon.
