China’s fourth-largest carrier Hainan Airlines Co. has announced through a Shanghai Stock Exchange statement that it plans to place a US$7.7 billion order with Boeing for 30 B787-9 Dreamliners.

China’s fourth-largest carrier Hainan Airlines Co. has announced through a Shanghai Stock Exchange statement that it plans to place a US$7.7 billion order with Boeing for 30 B787-9 Dreamliners.

Th e order would mark Boeing’s largest 787 Dreamliner order since 2013 and would make up nearly half of last year’s B787 orders. Th e purchase would more than triple Hainan’s current fleet of nine B787s, but the first delivery isn’t scheduled until 2021. Hainan Airlines currently has three outstanding orders for the aircraft type.

Th e Chinese carrier said it would use the additional widebody capacity to accelerate its international expansion with plans to increase existing connectivity to Europe and the US while rolling out new destinations. Th is year, Hainan is starting five new routes: Beijing-Tel Aviv, Beijing-San Jose, Shanghai-Boston, Shanghai-Seattle and Chongqing-Rome. It’s also increasing the frequency of flights between Beijing and Boston.
