Barely eight months into his retirement, former global head of cargo for the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Des Vertannes has re-joined the air cargo industry, taking up a role as strategic advisor for IT firm, SmartKargo.

Announcing Vertannes’ new role in the company,  Jay Shelat, SmartKargo executive VP, Sales and Marketing said: “We are fortunate to have Des on board. “Des’ more than four decades of air cargo experience, knowledge, and network are unsurpassed.”
Des, who now divides his time between UK and Portugal, comes to SmartKargo after retiring as head of cargo at IATA, a post he held for four years. Prior to IATA, Des led cargo teams at four airlines, including British Airways, Air Canada, and Etihad. Vertannes was honoured for his work in the industry with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the recent Payload Asia Awards 2014.

Everybody knows I’m a strong advocate of e-freight and for a paperless industry” said Vertannes, “because I have worked for decades to modernise and streamline air cargo process, a task that starts with capable IT.

“When SmartKargo says they are the world’s most advanced cargo software, it’s much more than a marketing statement, it’s fact. No other cargo platform can do what SmartKargo does: paperless transactions; 100 per cent cloud-based, meaning you can use the system on any Internet-enabled device (no expensive hardware to buy); information instantly accessible to every stakeholder in the air cargo chain; total flexibility in pricing; and lots more. SmartKargo has the power to transform air cargo, and I hope to contribute towards that transformation.”
