Heathrow airfreight up 7.8 per cent

Cargo traffic grew 7.8 per cent to 128,206 tonnes at Heathrow Airport in July with Mexico, Russia and China contributing to the increase during the summer month, according to a company statement. China’s performance is likely to strengthen further in the coming months as Air China will double its service to Beijing from October, to 51 departures from Heathrow per week.

“The doubling of Air China’s routes to Beijing represents a vote of confidence.

It’s also recognition that despite other UK airports having spare capacity, only Heathrow can deliver daily, direct flights to emerging economies that will help Britain win in the global race for growth. Gatwick can’t, Heathrow can,” said Heathrow’s chief executive John Holland-Kaye.
