Hanoi-based VietJetAir i s considering both Airbus and Boeing widebody proposals ahead of flights due to be launched by 2017, according to the carrier’s managing director Luu Duc Khanh. The carrier is aiming to tap both tourist potential and the Vietnamese Diaspora. The carrier announced back in March that it would expand its original business model to medium and long-haul sectors with north Asia and Australia among its planned markets. Prior to that it had finalised a major narrowbody order with Airbus encompassing firm orders for forty-two A320neo, fourteen A320ceo, seven A321ceo, and thirty purchase rights. In addition, the airline said it would lease eight more A320-200 aircraft from third party lessors.

Payload Asia understands the carrier has cargo ambitions as well, which extend to the acquisition of freighters at some point, likely B737 or B757s, sources have said.
