Emirates Airlines has cancelledorders worth US$16 billion for 70of Airbus’s new A350 widebody aircraft. Thesurprise announcement came on 11 Juneby Airbus who said that Emirates hadscrapped its order of 50 A350-900s and 20A350-1000s. The order represented nineper cent of all A350XWB orders for Airbus.Rolls-Royce, the sole manufacturer andprovider of engines for the A350, has lostjet engine orders worth about $4.37 billionwith this cancellation as well. Emirates hasbeen the second largest customer for theaircraft along with Singapore Airlines. Themassive Airbus order by Emirates was donetogether with an order of 150 of Boeing’sB777Xs of which the carrier also tookoptions for 50 of the B777Xs. Emirateshas been largest customer for the A380and for Boeing’s existing B777s.
