Al Maha on track to secure Saudi AOC: al Baker

Al Maha Airways is on track to secure its Air Operators Certificate (AOC) from the General Authority of Civil Aviation of Saudi Arabia (GACA), according to the CEO of parent Qatar Airways, Akbar al Baker. “Applying for an AOC is a very complex process. And we are very advanced in this,” he said. “We should be getting our air operator’s certificate (AOC) in Saudi Arabia very soon.”

Saudi Arabia’s Shoura Council in May urged GACA to expedite the licensing approval for Al Maha and fellow entrant Saudi Gulf Airlines in the interest of liberalising the country’s airline industry. Part of the requirements laid down by the Qatari-backed airline for its entrance into the Saudi domestic market was the termination of subsidies to local incumbent Saudia, arguing that Riyadh’s continued extension of funding to Saudia severely distorts the market.
