Hamad Int’l Airport officially opens

After a series of delays, Qatar’s Hamad International Airport saw the first official landing of a flight with a Qatar Airways A320 marking the official opening of passenger operations on 30 April.

Cargo operations began earlier, from 1 December 2013, with an inaugural flight by Qatar Airways Cargo arriving from Europe. Designed to accommodate 30 million passengers annually, rising to 50 million upon full completion, the airport covers an area of 29 sq kms and is 60 per cent built on land reclaimed from the Gulf. It is also expected to handle 320,000 aircraft movements and two million tonnes of cargo annually.
