Last year saw the best cargo results for Düsseldorf Airport Cargo since 2001, with over 110,000 tonnes of cargo handled, up 9.1 per cent over the previous year. A number of factors contributed to this success according to the airport, the main ones being the 180 international routes served by the airport with many airlines using wide bodied passenger aircraft with substantial belly capacity.
The presence of the hubs of the Star Alliance and the One-World adds significantly to the growing belly cargo business. The airport is strategically positioned at the centre of the busiest manufacturing and most affluent populations in Germany. In addition to the airport’s ready access to a wide range of lower-deck capacity, an independent trucking network based in this high potential catchment area is stimulating Düsseldorf’s further cargo growth. Around 20 per cent of German exports and 22 per cent of the country’s GDP is generated in the Federal North Rhine Westphalia.
Gerton Hulsman, MD Düsseldorf Airport Cargo commented: “We gained significant new airlines and routes last year including American Airlines with daily B767-300 Chicago service, the extended contract with BA and the IAG Group, Etihad’s continuing daily A330 services links with Air Berlin’s daily A330 service to Abu Dhabi, Emirates continued operation of two daily B777-300ER flights and Iraqi Airways began regular flights between various airports in Iraq.
