The Dubai-based port operator handled 55 million teu in 2013, an increase on the previous year, and showed a much stronger second half of the year. Chairman Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem said: “We are pleased to deliver gross like-for-like throughput growth in 2013, despite the challenging macroeconomic backdrop.
DP World moved 14.2 million teu during the third quarter of 2013 showing the improving global economic climate is boosting trade. The figures seem to reflect a growing trend in the shipping industry, with Maersk also reporting an increase in profits compared with 2012.
Group chief executive Mohammed Sharaf added: “Our full year throughput performance is pleasing, particularly given the softer market conditions we experienced in the first half of 2013.
“The addition of new capacity in 2014, combined with a projected pick-up in global trade, should allow us to return to a more normalised growth rate.”
