FIATA urges recognition of importance of logistics

The International Federation of Freight Forwarders Associations (FIATA) is urging the 30-Member States Open Working on Sustainable Development to realise the importance of international trade in boosting economic prosperity.

In designing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), FIATA said it could not fail to notice that the focus on the powerful contribution that logistics provides to development is in general insufficiently visible or perceived.

FIATA went on to highlight that logistics connectivity is a critical for gains to be achieved in productivity, growth and employment in a macroeconomic context. “Given that supply chain and logistics processes are deeply embedded in the value creation throughout different sectors and industries, it is clear that the logistics industry is of equal strategic importance in achieving sustainability as it is in terms of economic development. Additionally, as the logistics industry is expected to continue growing, so will its energy consumption and GHG emissions, unless changes are made,” the federation said. FIATA recently published a position paper which argued the design of SDGs needs to be action-oriented and conscious of the transport industry.

Additionally, in order to ensure that SDGs are coherent with and integrated into the United Nations (UN) development agenda beyond 2015, more facilitated inclusion and participation from impactful industry stakeholders, like FIATA, need to be involved in the upcoming sustainable development sessions.
