Come April 1, Qatar will open phase one of the new Hamad International Airport in Doha. To be operated by national carrier Qatar Airways, the launch will see at least a dozen international carriers using the new facility.
According to Abdul Aziz Al Noami, Qatar’s civil aviation authority chairman, cargo operations at the airport will begin soon after the airport starts functioning. From March, freight forwarders and agents in Qatar will process import and export consignments at Hamad International Airport. However, cargo uplift and arrivals will remain at Doha International Airport from where shipments will be transported by road to the new facility. Freighter flights will operate from Hamad International from summer this year.
