Glyn Hughes, IATA’s director of cargo distribution, said that the air cargo industry had to change itself to adapt to the changing market conditions. Speaking at IATA’s Media Day in Geneva, Hughes said that the airfreight business had become complex because of the large number of interfaces involved and “if airfreight wants to position itself as (a part of) a fast, efficient supply chain”, it needed to address these complexities.

He also spoke about the challenges faced by the airfreight industry: online shopping and airline passengers from developing economies flying with goods for sale at home. The only way out was for the industry to align with consumer demands and redefine relationships with freight forwarders.
