Finnair has selected lightweight unit load devices (ULDs) — Nordisk UltraLite AKE containers — for its widebody planes. The move is part of Finnair’s drive to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The new containers weigh 55 kg — 25 kg less than the ones being used now. The ULDs will save approximately 800,000 kg in fuel and more than 2.5 million kg of CO2 annually. In addition, they are strong being made from material used in bulletproof vests and aircraft cockpit doors.
