IAG could take stake in American Airlines

Mounting losses mount and falling tonnages stump AA

International Airlines Group (IAG), the owner of British Airways and Spanish airline Iberia, could take a minor stake in American Airlines (AA). A company spokesperson was quoted saying that IAG had a strong partnership with AA and “wouldn’t rule out investing in a restructured AA if they would welcome that”. Recently, AA decided to do away with 40 cargo jobs at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. AA incurred a net loss of $241 million during the second quarter of 2012, a byproduct of the bankruptcy restructuring costs and the cargo wing has seen tonnage falling 4.9 per cent, year-over-year, in July this year.
