Russian no to Lufthansa Cargo and Finnair

Overflights over Siberian airspace stopped

ETS Finnair Lufthansa Cargo overflights Russia Siberian airspace

Russia will not allow overflights by Lufthansa Cargo and Finnair. The immediate cause for the refusal by Russia is still not known. However, overflights by European carriers over Siberian airspace have been a source of trade friction in the past.

Reports indicate that though Russia is scheduled to gradually put an end to charges for overflights, the recent refusal is a protest against the European Union’s plans to include all flights coming or flying out of Europe in its Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS).
