Garuda to buy three freighters

The airline wants to be leader for Asian cargo brands by 2015

Indonesia’s national airline Garuda Indonesia’s cargo division, Cargo Garuda Indonesia wants to be “the leader for Asian cargo brands by 2015”. It will induct three A330Fs in 2014 that it has decided to buy for $600 mn. Two months ago, Garuda signed a purchase contract with Airbus for 11 A330-300s worth $2.54 bn.

Garuda has seen a rise of 10.8 per cent in its cargo capacity: from 207,000 tons in 2010 to 229,000 tons in 2011. In Q1 this year, the airline carried 65,488 tons, a 16.7 per cent increase from 56,127 tons carried during the same period last year. The carrier has also expanded its cargo warehouse at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Cengkareng.
