May 30, 2012
Freight capacity at Muscat International Airport – presently undergoing development — will more than double to 250,000 tonnes per year from the present annual capacity of 99,000 tonnes. According to the acting chief executive officer of Oman Airports Management Company (OAMC), Vic Allen, the first phase of development will see temperature-controlled storage and an efficient semi-automated cargo handling system. Once the first phase of construction of the new cargo terminal is completed, it will provide two and half times the present capacity.
Oman also has plans to expand Salalah Airport’s yearly capacity to 100,000 tonnes and establish terminals at Sohar and Duqm airports with a capacity of 50,000 tonnes each.
