The Chennai Port Trust has plans to build an air freight station (AFS) — that will take care of statutory clearances, Customs documentation and examination; cargo acceptance check; security checks and palletisation — near Chennai airport. The Port Trust owns 2.13 acres of land about two km from the international airport. If it does take place, air cargo stakeholders will be benefited and the congestion at the gates of the cargo facility at the airport will decrease. Currently, there are two AFSs in the vicinity of the airport.
The Chennai Port Trust has, in fact, sent out an ‘expression of interest notice’ to the trade to explore interest for development of an AFS.
