Portal bypasses need for freight forwarders

Dutch logistics firms have launched an online portal that allows companies to schedule shipments without the use of freight forwarders. Although currently only available for freight originating in the Netherlands, the portal could be expanded if it proves successful, according to its creators. Aircargoshop which went live in October, makes freight forwarding a ‘self-service’ concept that works on a prepaid basis and allows shippers to determine the date – and the cost – of the shipment, bypassing forwarders in the process. Importantly, Aircargoshop also complies with laws requiring shippers to obtain Authorised Economic Operator status and register with Customs as international transporters. The online portal came about at the behest of the Dutch shippers’ council (EVO) for such an option. “Aircargoshop is a step forward in modernising the air cargo world. It’s a way for logistics service providers to do business without relying on old-fashioned means,” the council said.
