Frankfurt-Hahn airport has seen its cargo traffic surge 25 per cent in 2011 compared to a year earlier on the back of strong German exports. The airport handled 286,416 tonnes of airfreight which when combined with trucked airfreight reached a total figure of 565,344 tonnes for the year.
Other German airports didn’t fare as well however with neighbouring Frankfurt feeling the pinch of the total ban on night flights that came into effect from November, seeing its cargo volumes declining 2.8 per cent to 2.17 million tonnes.
Munich airport on the other hand saw more measured growth with a 4.2 per cent rise in cargo tonnage to 286,201 tonnes, representing a new record. Combined with airmail, the volume of flown airfreight topped 300,000 tonnes for the first time and represented a six per cent gain over the 2010 figure.
