Air cargo freight rates from Malaysia to Japan have increased by 50-60 per cent from US$2.20 per kg, on the back of turmoil in the Middle East which has pushed up oil prices, as well as fuel shortages in Japan and reduced cargo capacity to the earthquake stricken country. Penang Freight Forwarders Association president Krishnan Chelliah told StarBiz that air freight rates were rising because of the fewer aircraft flying to Japan. “Narita and Haneda airports are running short of fuel, so the work there has slowed down. The number of cargo aircraft that can land in these two airports is also limited,” Chelliah said.
