India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has uncovered an interstate corruption racket that it claims implicates at least seven Customs officials. The officials have been arrested and accused of taking bribes from a domestic freight forwarder in return for clearing its import and export consignments in the state of Gujarat. “A deep-rooted corruption network exists, wherein some custom house agents and a few individuals regularly pay bribes to officials based on clearances of consignments,” a senior CBI official was quoted by Indian media as saying.
