Lufthansa Cargo is expanding its network with thrice-weekly China flights to Shenzhen, twice-weekly flights to Kolkata, India and thrice-weekly services to Barcelona, Spain from end-March. “We will now be serving more than 20 cities in Asia direct with our freighters and expanding our position in the world’s major air cargo market,” said Andreas Otto Lufthansa Cargo board member Product and Sales. Lufthansa Cargo began flying to Shenzhen, China; Kolkata, Calcutta; and Barcelona using MD-11 equipment from end-March, while the carrier’s joint-venture partner, Aerologic, will offer connections from Lufthansa’s Frankfurt hub to Houston and Lahore. All Aerologic’s flights are once a week. Lufthansa already has a presence in Shenzhen because of its stake in Jade Cargo, which is based there, as well as Lufthansa’s joint-venture International Cargo Centre Shenzhen (ICCS) with partner Shenzhen Airport. Thanks to its status as a Special Economic Zone and its location in the Pearl River Delta, Shenzhen ranks among the most important industrial centers in the world. To accommodate the air freight demand, Jade Cargo International will continue to operate the Shenzhen-Frankfurt twiceweekly services with B747 freighters.
