SriLankan Cargo recorded its highest ever transhipment of freight through Colombo in 2010, handling 26,445 tonnes at the Sri- Lankan Cargo Centre at Bandaranaike International Airport, an increase of 43 per cent over 2009. Overall, the cargo centre handled 156,142 tonnes of cargo in 2010 – imports, exports, and transhipment cargo – the third highest total handled at BIA in a single year and a 23 per cent increase over year 2009, the carrier said. SriLankan Cargo is the sole ground handler at BIA and serves all airlines, charters, freighters, and private aircraft. In 2010 it doubled the handling capacity at its Cargo Centre by commissioning a new Exports Terminal, and now has the capacity to handle up to of 300,000 tones of cargo per annum.
