China’s Shanghai Customs has initiated a pilot reform of classified customsclearance for airfreight imports which has reduced clearance time by 50 per cent for low-risk goods. At present, this pilot reform using computer automation has covered all the business sites at the air/ sea ports under Shanghai Customs. Since the low-risk import/export documents account for 70 and 80 per cent respectively, of the total import/ export documents under the pilot project, the overall customs clearance speed has significantly improved at Shanghai’s air and sea ports.
