Total air cargo movements through Israel’s airports during the first eight months ¨C January to August 2010 ¨C amounted to 204,829 tones, up 17 per cent compared to 174,836 tones in the corresponding period. The Israel Airports Authority reported that during August Ben-Gurion International Airport handled 23,859 tonnes of air cargo compared to 21,432 in August 2009, an increase of 11 per cent. In August El Al carried 5,339 tonnes of cargo in the belly holds of its passenger fleet, an increase of 24 per cent compared to the same period a year earlier when it carried 4,299 tonnes and 2,805 tonnes onboard its freighters, an increase of 10.5 per cent, year-on-year. During the first eight months ¨C January to August 2010 ¨C El Al carried 38,579 tonnes of belly cargo, an increase of 27.5 per cent compared to a year earlier when it carried 30,253 tonnes. During the first eight months El Al carried 30,800 tonnes aboard its freighters, an increase of 7.1 per cent year-on-year. The other key Israeli cargo carrier, CAL, carried on its freighters 4,170 tonnes in August, an increase of 14.5 per cent compared to the 3,640 tonnes it carried a year earlier). During the first eight months ¨C January to August 2010 ¨C CAL carried 37,698 tonnes, an increase of 8 per cent compared to 34,795 tonnes a year earlier. In August El Al held a market share of 26 per cent whereas CAL held 39 per cent of Israel’s air cargo market.
