Australia has slapped a ban on the operation of AN124 and AN225 freighters, threatening of the viability of specialist heavy-lift air cargo operations in Australia. The world’s largest freighters are now banned from landing at all Australian airports without first being granted an exemption on the grounds of “public interest” by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development and Local government (DITRDL). The restrictions also apply to those refueling for onward journeys to New Zealand. The ban, which also impacts the country’s military could have severe implications for companies in the oil, gas and mining sectors which use the planes commercially.
