A new air cargo security project – Cargo Checkpoint – has been launched at Amsterdam Schiphol airport in the Netherlands. It uses a variety of systems to check cargo containers as they are driven through a so-called “scan street” on trailers at a speed of 10 km an hour. Scanned images then are inspected by Customs analysts who identify any irregularities and can call for further inspections. The project is a partnership between Dutch Customs authorities, the airport management (Schiphol Group) and airline group Air France-KLM Cargo. “Cargo Checkpoint is unique in that government inspections are conducted within the handlers’ logistics processes, minimising potential interruptions to the logistics chain,” the three groups said in a statement. “Until now, various different methods of inspection were applied at various different locations by various different organisations. The Cargo Checkpoint pilot project ensures that all these inspection methods and moments are incorporated into the logistics chain.â€Â
