United Airlines will conduct a small test of RFID bag tags at Chicago O’Hare, according to an employee communication. “We’re looking to validate whether this technology will speed up the baggage check process,” initiative leader Gary Dulaney said.

More than 1,000 high-mileage travellers are to participate in the six-week trial, which is being conducted in partnership with the Star Alliance Technical Advisory Committee. The participating passengers will receive reusable RFID bag tags at their homes and will check in online before arriving at the airport.

A UA representative will scan the RFID tag and provide a baggage claim receipt for each piece. After the customer departs, the tag will be scanned again before the bag enters sorting and screening.
