New figures show Australia’s airfreight is the most emissions-intensive of the country’s freight transport sector with rail producing the least amount of greenhouse gases in a recent study.
Overall emissions in Australia are expected to increase by 100 per centby 2020 with total emissions from the transport sector having grown by 27per cent between 1990 and 2006. Emissions from freight transport – including the greenhouse gases produced by light commercial vehicles, shipping, trucks, and aviation – grew by almost 40 per cent over the same period.
