India’s Larsen & Toubro Ltd’s whollyowned subsidiary, Larsen & Toubro Oman, is said to be planning to bid for the proposed US$711 million greenfield Muscat International Airport construction project, according to the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation.
Larsen & Toubro previously stated it was interested in foreign airport opportunities. President of the Construction Division, KV Rangaswamy said: “We will look for foreign airport modernisation contracts and greenfield airports, as and when they come up”.
The greenfield airport – located 15 kilometres from the existing Muscat al-Seeb International Airport which will reach its capacity before 2015 – is being constructed to handle Oman’s strategic aviation growth. Phase I is designed to handle 12 million passengers per annum, with eventual capacity to handle 48 million passengers a year.
Larsen & Toubro have a strong presence in India’s airport sector, having been involved in expansion contracts for Mumbai and Delhi airports, and the construction of greenfield airports in Hyderabad and Bangalore. The company’s Oman division has also expressed interest in bidding for the proposed greenfield Ras Al Hadd airport project in Oman.
