Envirotainer, provider of temperature-controlled air cargo containers to healthcare industry, recently appointed international forwarding industry executive Peter Reinhart as its sales agent for Iberia.
His appointment was based on growing pharmaceutical industry production in Spain and the surrounding region, as well as Spain’s potential to act as a gateway for pharmaceutical traffic flows to and from South America.
“Spain is by no means the largest market for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals in Europe but it is growing fast in relation to other countries in the region,” said Envirotainer vice president sales Martin Peter.
“Spain will not be a Germany or a Switzerland as far as pharmaceutical production is concerned. Actually, I would compare it more with Italy. But there are already a handful of major pharmaceutical manufacturers there – Wyeth, for example, has a large biotech factory in the Madrid region – and maybe two handfuls of smaller biotech companies.”
But he added that it was not purely about the domestic or regional markets, but the Latin American market as well because of historical links with Spain and Portugal. Peter said there was substantial pharma industry development going on in South America, notably in Brazil where recent developments had included the opening of a new insulin factory which was now producing “significant volumes”.
