The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has welcomed the endorsement of the Montreal Convention of 1999 (MC 99) by South Korea’s National Assembly as a positive step towards enabling that nation for e-freight.
The endorsement of MC 99, which governs international air carrier liability, is a basic requirement for e-freight as it includes a provision that allows carriers to eliminate the delivery of a paper airway bill.“The endorsement of MC 99 is a clear and welcome signal that the government of the Republic of Korea is supportive of creating a legal and regulatory framework that will allow our industry to free air freight of cumbersome and expensive paper documents,”said Aleks Popovich, IATA’s global head of cargo.
IATA is conducting five e-freight pilot projects in Canada, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, Singapore (which has also recently endorsed MC 99) and the UK on high volume routes. The pilots will develop and test standards, processes, and technical solutions.
